OUTREACH EVENTS

With the money we raised from the Color My World Color Run 2018, we were able to fully fund suicide prevention training for all of our staff and also create free peer-to-peer mental health outreach activities throughout the year. Here are some of the outreach activities we put on:

Lisa Klein, award-winning director of 'The S Word', Dylan Koss, and Ms. Amelia visit Northville High School! Club members participated in a meaningful discussion with these leaders in mental health awareness. They offered advice and insight into the mental health of students and provided an accepting ear for students to voice their personal struggles to. Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

After working closely with the principal of Northville High School and the Mental Health Committee, we were finally able to implement teen suicide training into our school! This is the culmination of over one and a half years of work, both by the club and the community. This training was fully paid for with the money raised by the 2018 Color Run! A huge thanks goes out to everyone who helped and supported us along the way, and we hope you continue being a part of our journey to spread our message and our colors!

On March 27th we hosted an advocate night in Northville High School’s cafeteria! We laid out mental health pamphlets and resources, cookies, and lemonade, listened to NHS students share their battles with mental health, read students anonymous experiences and stories from the silhouette project, and got to hear an incredible story from our guest speaker Bellal Ammar. He discussed his struggle being a refugee, his battle with mental health, and his silver lining. Afterwards we had a Q & A session that gave students the advice they needed! This event had an amazing turn out and was completely FREE to attend. Thank you to everyone who participated!

In December, we had our first mental health outreach activities of the 2018-2019 school year! We gave out pocket sized mental health resources, handwritten positive notes made by club members, and of course free, freshly-made pancakes!

Club members handed out fresh smoothies and handmade notes. Additionally, we passed out pocket sized pamphlets that had a list of mental health resources and warning signs of mental illness for students! This event was created by students for students, and everything we handed out was completely FREE!

We passed out free stickers as our 6th mental health outreach activity. Our main purpose for this activity was to shown awareness for mental health and show students that the people around us do care! When you put an "I Care" sticker on your phone, car, water bottle, laptop, or shirt, you’re showing that you care about mental health. You’re showing that you care about the well being of others around you. You’re showing that your feelings are not indifferent from others, and that people can confide in you if they need it. That’s what these stickers mean so wear them with purpose, kindness, and care!

We hosted a FREE meditation event in the forum after school! We were able to de-stress, practice mindfulness, relax, and take time for ourselves. This was led by Empower Yoga’s very own Kristy St. John. Thank you to everyone who participated in our 7th outreach activity of the year!
